Do you think that raising awareness campaigns are farcical?
Do you think that they don't serve any purpose?
Do you think that raising awareness at the individual level is a key strategy to bring about a change?

I've always considered the Holy Trinity of Sustainable Building to be:
1. Grey Water
2. Solar Panels
3. Radiant heating

However when it comes to radiant heating, is it really the most efficient approach or are we being brainwashed as designers by the hype? Consider the following: In the east coast, radiant heating is a no-brainer as you typically would leave a system running for long periods of time during the cool weather seasons.

But in California, our temperature fluctuations are so drastic; it's oftentimes cold at night and hot during the day. So if we install a radiant heating system won't the homeowner be constantly turning the system off and on to the point where the system becomes inefficient from a green building perspective?

What do you think?

Newly Updated Seafood Watch Card
http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp

The rest of this I cut and paste from a recent email.

The Seafood Watch Pocket Guide is a great tool when you’re choosing what seafood to buy. But to use the guide, you need certain information – where did a fish come from? How was it caught? – and sometimes that information is hard to find. It’s not always on the package, and the person behind the counter doesn’t always know it either.
But by asking questions, you are sending a powerful message, a message that you care about where your seafood comes from and how it is farmed or caught. This message is affecting change, and we have evidence to prove it.

• In a survey of 26 restaurants and businesses in the Monterey Bay area, half said they had changed their business operations after learning about the Seafood Watch program or receiving requests from customers for sustainable seafood.
• In a survey of pocket guide users, 86 percent said they had chosen not to buy certain seafood because of environmental concerns.
• In the same survey, almost 80 percent said they now buy less of some type of seafood because of the pocket guide recommendations.

With over 8 million pocket guides in circulation since the program began over 5 years ago and nearly 6,000 people on our newsletter distribution list, the collective efforts of all of us together is powerful. In the next few e-newsletters we will highlight the major successes we've accomplished together. Please consider submitting your own success story online and joining our Seafood Advocate program to receive additional outreach tools.

Here's to start a discussion on membership and services. I'm not done with this, but it's a start.

MEMBERSHIP
If you want to develop a more sustainable relationship with your environment (human, animal, and inanimate,)
If you believe that doing so requires the acknowledgement of the fundamental interrelatedness of all life systems on the planet, and
If you're ready to get to work right here and,
then you need to join the San Francisco Urban Alliance for Sustainability!

We're a dynamic group of committed entrepreneurs, friends, visionaries, neighbors, and pragmatists working to create an organization of sustainability activists right here in San Francisco. We've been hosting mixers and networking events for several years now to catalyze a movement for sustainability, and have met with much enthusiasm and encouragement in the process. The next stage of development is upon us. We see the potential for an organization, which develops sustainability support services for individuals and businesses in San Francisco, to be not just successful but revolutionary in nature.

If not us, who? If not here, where? If not now, when?

Invest in SFUAS so that we all can invest in sustainability together.

Our vision is to build an organization which is also an alternate economy regulated in the interest of local sustainability. Our members will develop the vision and help to execute it, and we will have staff to coordinate the execution and to fill in the gaps created when organizational demands exceed membership supply. The basic commodity to be exchanged in this economy is not cash, but the skills and energy of individual members of the SFUAS community. "What do you have to share" is the basic question you should ask yourself when considering what role you will play in SFUAS. However, in developing a concept around which a membership organization can be built, there is always a recourse to and need for cash, and so the default membership fee is expressed in dollars, and is expected to be paid in dollars for new members while the value of their contributions can be evaluated.

Organizationally, there are several basic functions to be performed by the various parts of SFUAS. The members will need to provide feedback to questions of priority and value in order to do the regulating of the local economy. So, one basic function, performed by or coordinated by the staff, is information gathering and processing. Another function of SFUAS is to help individuals and businesses to go about their daily business in continuously more sustainable ways. This is service providing, and does not stop at membership, though by the very nature of membership members will be able to better benefit from services which require SFUAS to have information about the recipient of a service in order for the service to be administered effectively.

The framework is still developing, and this is really just the initial membership drive. Our brainstorming has produced the following results for membership packages with associated services. Whether or not you think it's the perfect solution for you right now, we ask that you make the investment in the system. With your help and participation, we hope to provide real value to the members of our community. See which package is right for you. All costs are negotiable, provided as guidelines to help you understand how much energy SFUAS will be putting into your success as a member of the sustainability community. In kind contributions are acceptable (think barter and volunteer time, with receipts.) Talk to us about it.

All memberships are tax deductible pending our 501c3 determination, so hold on to your receipts for FY 2006 tax returns! We are currently fiscally sponsored by Global Exchange, so if 501c3 is required by your organization, you can send your money that way (which we have established for preliminary grant requests) though it would cost us 7% of your membership dues to do so.

Creation of media supportive of sustainability
Support for urban gardening/permaculture projects

Also in there, Networking and group building services (domestic groups, tribes, etc.) as well as poling of resources for collective project work, and effective civic participation facilitation (rating and comparing the activities of organizations, governmental agencies, and corporations in our area and providing a framework to collectively address concerns we have with the picture that develops).

So, membership is about services, but services go beyond membership.

I hope this isn't posted too hastily... hope it provides a good jumping off point for discussion. I'll revisit and summarize later.
email: reallyfreemarket@...

What is The Really REALLY Free Market?
It's like a large community-wide garage sale, except everything is
FREE! Yes, that's right, FREE! Everyone is invitied to bring things to
GIVE AWAY!

So this is like bartering or trading, right?
Nope. Bartering and trading go something like this: I've got this
great shirt here, what can you offer me for it?
The RRFM goes something like this: I've got this really great shirt
here. I don't really wear it anymore, but I'd hate to see it go to
waste. Do you want it? Great! Here, it's yours!

Why would i want to do a thing like that?
Because you have to many things already! Because you're just going to
throw it away anyway. Because it FEELS GOOD! Do you have things
cluttering up your home? Maybe some stuff that you don't use anymore,
but you know that someone else would probably love. One person's trash
can truly be another person's treasure!

What should I bring?
Bring *your thing* to the RRFM, whatever that is! Material goods, food
or drinks, a service to provide, a skill you have that you want to
teach to others, a performance, or anything else!

What if I don't have anything to give away?
Everyone has something to give to others. The RRFM isn't just about
giving away *stuff.* What is it that you do? Why not come to the RRFM
and find a way to do it for others, except this time for free just for
the fun of it. As a gift to others, as a gift to yourself. It's a way
of reclaiming meaning in your job, to give it as a gift, unmediated by
commerce.

Who runs the RRFM?
Well, the RRFM consists of the sum of its participants. The gift you
bring to the event, helps create what the event is for others, just as
what others bring to the event, creates what the event is for you.
That said, there are some folks who came together to help create the
structure for the RRFM to work. But it is our hope that soon enough,
our role within the RRFM will be the same as everyone else's. That is,
that each of us decides our own level of involvement.

The RRFM is yours!
Take advantageous of that. Make it what you want it to be! If you want
to see something happening at the RRFM that isn't already happening,
than make it happen! If you want to see more people coming to the
RRFM, help spread the word! Send emails to your friends, make and
distribute flyers (make your own or download them from the website),
talk to people about the RRFM.
----
Please help us keep the RRFM a 100% FREE and non-commercial event.
Once a month, let's come together and forget about trading, bartering,
and money. Leave the business cards at home and remember the joy of
giving for the sake of giving. Help us keep Dolores Park clean. If no
one takes what you brought, please bring it home with you. If you like
what you just read, get involved! Come to the RRFM! Bring your own
gifts to share! Spread the info, and get more people involved! The
RRFM takes YOU to make it happen.

Hi Everyone.

On Thursday, June 2, we will host the Greenhouse Jam, part of our
Sustainability Mixer Series and a component of the United Nations
World Environment Day (WED). Established by the U.N. General Assembly
in 1972, WED is hosted every year by a different city and commemorated
with an international exposition through the week of June 5.

The Greenhouse Jam, from 7:00 - 10:00 at the Fort Mason, will bring
together an international community of mayors, political activists,
non-profiteers, and green entrepreneurs, as well as people of all
ages, professions and backgrounds in an unparalleled networking
opportunity.

Inspiration is contagious! As part of the event, SFUAS is producing
an electronic slideshow that will showcase to real-life
SUSTAINABILITY SOLUTIONS* here in San Francisco and the Bay Area. It
should be a one-of-a-kind opportunity to direct attention to what is
ACTUALLY happening and not just being talked about. Best of all - we
are looking for your help to provide the content! This is your
opportunity to show off your solution to a worldwide audience and get
the word out!

*What is a SUSTAINABILITY SOLUTION
Solutions are those activities, endeavors, businesses, practices and
habits that harmonize our living systems with natural cycles and
strong sensitivity to environmental concerns with a focus on
self-sufficiency. They can be big (e.g., bio-fuel collectives) or
small (e.g., home worm bin) or anywhere in between. Here are some
examples of what we'd all like to see:

- innovative building designs
- green businesses in action
- alternative energy systems
- local organic gardening and food distribution
- rain water collection
- grey water systems
- rooftop gardens
- community workshops
- social justice activities

Every solution you can think of - be creative!

What do we need from you?

Please send us slides that exhibit your solution:
- Powerpoint format
- Drawings, digital photos, your name, etc.
- 1-2 slides per individual, business or organization
- 10-30 slides per sponsor**

Please send all materials to Kevin Bayuk kevinbayuk@yahoo.com

** Contact Kevin Bayuk 415-999-5354, (kevinbayuk@yahoo.com
{mailto:kevinbayuk@yahoo.com}) for sponsorship opportunities.
Sponsoring the event is an excellent way to direct targeted attention
to your green business or organization. In addition to exposure
through the slide presentation your organization will be promoted as
an event sponsor.

Please pass this message on to everyone you know that might have
some content to add to the show and please come and celebrate with us
on Thursday June 2nd!!

Hello! I hope you are all doing very well. I had an amazing weekend, mixing a satsang with Adyashanti, a deep cry at the traveling memorial for the U.S. soldiers and civilians who have died in Iraq at Civic Center, Eyes Wide Open, and then a rowdy and short visit to the Anarchist Bookfair to catch Ward Churchill and meet some new folks. Just my cup of tea for a Saturday!

It was so moving seeing the installation of 1,528 boots in front of Civic Center representing the lives of the soldiers lost in Iraq since 2003. There were parents from some of the soldiers there and they read all of the names, I just wept and meditated for a few hours, it was really powerful. I thought of everyone I know and I wished they could have been there. I bought a documentary of the memorial in Santa Monica called Arlington West to show for the Global Awareness Forum this week. It is basically lots of brief interviews on people's thoughts and reactions to the growing number of crosses that honor the fallen U.S. soldiers on the beach. Its about an hour, plenty of time for discussion and a prayer/meditation circle to end the evening. Please bring a dish for the potluck and RSVP if you wish to attend. You can reach me at 415-312-0038 or 415-665-9644 or email me to let me know you are coming and for directions. Hope to see you there!

I will be posting the next few in advance so you can put them in your calendar! I will need to change them to Tuesdays for awhile so the next two are on Tuesday April 12th and Tuesday April 26th. I am thinking of showing a talk with various speakers on nuclear weapons redevelopment and a powerful speech from Cornell West on race relations, politics, culture, etc. I am hoping to get my copy of The Corporation from my KPFA donation soon and show that. Any suggestions of things you would like to see is welcome! If you have anything to share let me know. Also, please bring a $5 donation as I need to cover the cost of the films and CDs I have purchased to share.

See you soon!

Our mixer events this year have been a smashing success, thanks for all your feedback and support! We've all worked our butts-off all year long bringing about some major eco-social-revolutionary change - Now its time to kick back, hang out and celebrate! We deserve it! This event will be less of an organized program and allow more time for free form wining and dining.

Help us make this a real potluck by bringing a dish to share. Please keep it vegetarian and use as many organic ingredients as possible.

Greetings. Probably the single most difficult part of our contemporary experience involves healing the broken spaces between time past, present and future. Malcolm X left us with a reminder of how deeply this discontinuity can cut:

"Just as a tree without roots is dead, a people without history or culture also becomes a dead people."

Conversely, though, wholeness converges on the moment and, like a ubiquitous snow, falls across all time and space. This wholeness is accessible right here:
The best things in life are nearest: Breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of right just before you. Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life's plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things in life. (Robert Louis Stevenson)

Indeed, from small acts great patterns emerge. Many people left their ancient paths and came here to the United States, to San Francisco, to participate in the Industrial Age. Those already here were forced away from their path. In either case, much of importance was forgotten. Now we are remembering. This issue reflects a good deal of activity that leads to and stems from this healing process, across the past, present, and
future, and into the moment of our work. We'll close with both a discussion of how these works combine for amazing results and also with an invitation to share from your experience.

========================================================================

The NoBAWC (pronounced 'No Boss') Bay Area Worker Cooperative Conference and Festival held last weekend at the Women's Building in the Mission District of San Francisco was a huge success. Workers from all over Northern California converged to meet each other, network, play, skill-share and learn the history of the cooperative movement. One of the many highlights of this colorful event was the Saturday night variety show and fundraising auction. Coop comedians, Susan and Riddle, from Rainbow Grocery, kept the audience in stitches as they wooed them to bid on items donated by local coops to raise funds for NoBAWC. The comics were interspersed with live performance from coop bands Folk This, Wolverine, Urban Warrior, The Cooperative, and Smirk. We topped it off with a show stopping performance by the newest NoBAWC member, The Lusty Lady.

The conference itself was equally vibrant with 18 workshops on all different aspects of cooperative development from how to start a coop to how to train personnel and facilitate anti-oppression training within a coop. Much was shared and learned and there are only bright things to come for local coops. The bay area has the largest concentration of worker
owned cooperatives in the country and it is only going to keep growing. Participants were enthusiastic about the event continuing as a yearly event. Anyone interested in getting involved please contact info@nowbawc.org or call 510-549-1514
==========================================================================

It should be obvious from this edition of the NewMoon that the people that compose Alliance are doing a great deal of work throughout all the spheres of human life, from the home to the shop and within both the community and the continent. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts and you are
invited to participate as you can. Our small works add up and then become something bigger than you and me. One thing that makes all these individual works ultimately emerge as something beyond their individual scope is synergy. Two processes that share certain characteristics or that produce complimentary inputs and outputs may form a synergy, which in
turn finds its complimentary process and so on....

The San Francisco Urban Alliance for Sustainability observes and
facilitates synergy in the Bay Area. It is perhaps our greatest
contribution. Given that our individual works contribute to a whole greater than the sum of their parts, we'd like to highlite examples of synergy from our member's works.

If you are involved in an endeavor where synergy plays a part, please send me a note describing what you are doing. These endeavors may happen within a single system -- a home, a company -- or they may occur amongst
systems, such as is the case where people from different homes may share a ride to work or where people from two different companies share space, labor, inputs/outputs or services. Synergy may take place across the full
spectrum of our lives -- in the details, where we plunge our fingers into a bucket of dirt, or across the broadest swathes of existence, so... look everywhere.

We'll publish an exemplary couple of these in the next NewMoon.

peace,

Greetings,

The San Francisco Urban Alliance for Sustainability (SFUAS) is publishing its first monthly newsletter since last Spring, when we announced the EarthDay event at Cellspace (http://www.cellspace.org).

It was a beautiful event. Music, dancing... learning, connecting, growing. The stuff that dreams are made of.

And like a good dream it was both the product and progenitor of a great deal of activity. Winter planning gave way to a flurry of Spring intercourse, which is in turn yielding Autumnal fruits throughout the Alliance and the life that composes it.

This newsletter seeks to communicate both the logistics and also the spirit of that cultivation. Our forthcoming community-driven website will allow us to publish together on the SFUAS website. The editor's job will change to something more like a facilitator. Until then, e-mail your feedback, stories and information about SFUAS members (individuals and organizations) and our collective activities to me: thomas@sfuas.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

In this issue:
-- Cultivating the Fruits of Our Labor: SFUAS Events and Projects
-- Upcoming Events and Projects
-- Sister Spaces. Websites and Zines from Our Siblings at Large.
The Fruits of Our Labor: SFUAS Events and Projects

In this section:
-- Earthday @ Cellspace
-- Permaculturing the Commons

------------------------------
Earth Day @ Cellspace Rocked!

On April 22nd, SFUAS hosted the Earth Day event "Planting Seeds of Change." Hundreds of Attendees found kindred spirits and invigoration even as we were reminded to expand our understanding of our composition and strategies.

The music was diverse, ranging from a shamanic opening to festive Gypsy play and belly dancing. During the convocation, we were reminded that sustainability is more than energy efficiency: we were challenged to reach out to and embrace the Indigenous peoples as we plan SFUAS activities.

If you wonder how SFUAS, itself a network, fits into our larger ecology of eco-minded spirits, Kevin Danaher of Global Exchange made an inspirational point worth considering: We know that the ship is sinking, though others might realize it. What we are doing in response is building another ship. When the time comes, we'll pull up along side the sinking ship and not only offer passage, but "good music and drinks" as well.

The evening closed with everyone's forming a collective yogic lotus blossom.

Thank you to everyone who made this beautiful event possible. Special thanks go to our speakers, Malaika Edwards of the Peoples' Grocery, Tanya Einhorn of Urban Forage, the San Francisco Department of the Environment, Kevin Danaher Global Exchange, and everyone at the information tables.

------------------------------
Permaculturing the Commons

Recently, Lindsay Wilson and Hillary Strobel completed the first phase of a permaculture-based garden project at 111 Jones St. Apartments, an affordable housing complex in the Tenderloin, San Francisco. This gardening project focused on the rehabilitation of a grassy mound located in the complex's courtyard and freed a once-guarded space to support both a spiral herb garden and a walkway for residents.

The project stemmed from a SFUAS/SF Permaculture Guild Introduction to Permaculture course that was held at 111 Jones St. in February of 2004, and that was taught by Dima Novomeiski, Craig Moreland, Sebastien Bacharach and Valera Reznik. As a constructive project to apply their newly discovered permaculture knowledge, the participants of this workshop broke up into groups and created plans for the rehabilitation of the courtyard.

This project has flourished with the volunteer support and donations of many people: the Boys and Girls Club, Laguna Honda Hospital, Building Resources, HANC (Garden for the Environment), St Anthony's/Petaluma Farms, volunteers Jym and Laila, Noli and Roger and the staff and residents of Mercy Housing and 111 Jones Street.

I've been working on the concept of taking activism from a position of relative economic weakness to relative economic strength. The idea is that if corporations wield such great power, why not cleverly co-opt them and transform their focus into more progressive, sustainable directions?

The point is not simply a more progressive service or product goal of the corporation, it is whole underlying capitalist philosophy, behavior and objective of the corporation.

Can a "for profit" corporation have activism as one of its primary goals? Sure, but few do. Imagine the different funding situation for progressive causes if more did?

Can a corporation embrace an entirely new model of Aikido Activism? Yes it can; but it will be helpful to consider and advance the concept, and to consider special cases such as IP Aikido Activism (using intellectual property exclusionary rights towards Aikido Activism rather than the traditional direction in which IP is applied -- maximizing profit, usually myopically to other social and environmental issues).

The essay on "Aikido Activism" is posted at the tribe by the same name ( http://aikidoactivism.tribe.net/ ), but please message me if you'd like an MSWord version with intact endnotes and graphics (these get lost cutting and pasting into Tribe).

And thanks SFUAS for your Cell Space event and for your other activities. I met a couple of you there, and hope to have a chance to get involved with you somehow.
hi i would like to say how great it is when the people can meet and be out in the street in a safe and healthy mannor...
here is a great exmaple:
http://www.mexicocity.com.mx/coyoa2.html
this is a great zocalo or town square in southern mexico city i had the pleasure of visiting some years ago... it was filled with people on the warm nights and a market place was happening...the people selling their crafts and things, with entertainment and joyful being.
here in oakland we have a few places like and i wonder if you need a permit to entertain or vend there...
in sf is union square and the civic center lawns sixteenth street bart and 24th

what a great communities we could enliven all over the world with cirqious love and play and enrich all of our lives by allowing the marketplaces to thrive once again...
it is also great when the natural water systems can be designed to flow through, the psychological benefits of flowing water are amazing...
